Rob Spencer
With a coaching career spanning over three decades, Dr. Rob Spencer is one of the most accomplished and influential figures in Georgia’s competitive cheerleading community. Now in his 33rd year, Coach Spencer is currently leading the cheerleading program at Seckinger High School, where he has built a competitive team that has qualified for the state championship in just three seasons—an impressive feat for a new program.
Coach Spencer began his athletic journey as a baseball and football player, but his passion for gymnastics led him to cheerleading. After two years at a junior college in San Diego, Coach Spencer earned a scholarship to the University of Kentucky, where he competed on the Blue Squad and placed 2nd at the National Championships. His love for the sport eventually brought him to the University of Georgia, where he competed for the Bulldogs, earning a third-place finish at Nationals. Following his time as a competitive athlete, Coach Spencer transitioned into coaching at UGA while also pursuing graduate studies.
His coaching career began in 1993 at Winder Barrow High School, where he built the program from the ground up, securing four region championships and two state titles during his seven-year tenure. Coach Spencer continued his success at Shiloh High School, leading the team to three region championships and one state title in just four years. At Peachtree Ridge High School, Coach Spencer transformed a young program into a state powerhouse, earning 12 region titles and seven state championships over 18 seasons, with an outstanding record of 845 wins and only 138 losses.
In 2022, Coach Spencer took on the challenge of building Seckinger High School's competitive cheerleading program, and in just three years, the Jaguars have already earned a spot at state competitions.
Coach Spencer’s contributions to the sport of competitive cheerleading extend far beyond his own teams. He has helped refine the judging rubric, scoring system, routine structure, music design, and overall competition organization, shaping the GHSA varsity sport into what it is today.
Over the years, Coach Spencer has earned numerous accolades, including GCCA Coach of the Year (2019), NFHS State Coach of the Year for Georgia (2019), and the GHSA Inspirational Award (2025). His teams have accumulated:
-
10 State Championships
-
4 State Runner-up Finishes
-
19 Region Championships
Coach Spencer holds a doctorate in Coaching Expertise from the University of Georgia, where he studied under one of the leading experts in the field, Dr. Paul Schempp.
Outside of coaching, Coach Spencer is supported by his wife, Molly, with whom he has been happily married for 30 years. The couple has three children: Austin (a junior at Emmanuel University), Lexie (a sophomore at the Air Force Academy), and Kaden (a 6th grader at Dove Creek Middle School).
