Seckinger entered Saturday’s Region 7-AAAAA Duals tournament looking to stay on top of the mountain after defeating Gainesville 41-40 last season to claim the first region title in the school's brief history.
In Year 4 of the Jaguars' wrestling program under the direction of head coach Keith Oldknow, the team compiled a 14-3 dual record entering Saturday’s competition. The day began with Seckinger winning its semifinal match against Roswell 48-21, and it finished with a 39-25 victory over Gainesville for a repeat region duals championship.
The finals dual was a rematch of last year’s final. The dual was back and forth early with both teams earning victories by pin. With only three matches left in the dual, Seckinger clung to a small lead following a lengthy injury stoppage.
Oldknow spoke on the resilience of his team, saying “we still make too many mistakes, but our kids never give up and never back down.”
The Jaguars closed out the dual with an overtime victory from junior Flavio Drittlhuber, a technical fall by Becklan Guerty and an impressive 19-5 major decision from Zacariah Walker, making the final score 39-25.
“It’s awesome," Seckinger sophomore Zael Bonds said of a repeat region duals crown. "I am so proud of my team. We had a lot of guys step up today.”
